Every vegetarian knows the plight of a menu that isn’t catered to them. It often means a dinner of salad and French fries while looking enviously at the plates of others.

With wellness culture and clean eating trends on the rise, things are slowly changing. None of the cordoned-off vegetarian menu sections, however, has anything on the vegetarian and vegan brunch at The Eatery Restaurant in Four Points by Sheraton Bangkok, Sukhumvit 15.

An entire brunch stuffed to the brim with over 100 dishes and four live food stations? Say less!

The Ambience

Stepping into The Eatery, my colleague and I were greeted by floor-to-ceiling windows, splashes of orange tiles, and an open kitchen concept. The comfy chairs provide warm pops of colour to the seating arrangements, ranging from parties of two to larger family gatherings.

At each table, there are two sheets of paper. One is the “Good to Know” infographic, which details the key to differentiating between a vegan dish and a vegetarian one. The amount of care that has gone into the concept of vegetarian dining at The Eatery is evident in every corner of the space, right down to the cans of water from sustainable brand Greenery.

After taking all of this in, my colleague and I were more than ready to dive in.

The Bites

No meal, vegetarian or otherwise, can begin without the presence of a salad. Some of the salads on offer at the brunch setup included the Creamy Pasta Salad, for when you want to be healthy but not too healthy, and the refreshing Smoked Cucumber Salad, which packs both a punch and a crunch.

If you’re feeling something a little more filling, the Broccoli Salad with Roasted Almonds has a delicious vegan pesto base, which feels like a whole meal in itself.

From the salads, we moved on to the à la carte menu, starting with the Lion’s Mane CFC. Arriving in a mini bucket, this deep-fried lion’s mane mushroom emulates the iconic Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise — but as the smiling cartoon chicken in a pilgrim hat on the bucket symbolises, this is actually CFC: Cruelty-Free Chicken!

Other highlights included the Navy Beans and Cauliflower Risotto with Grilled Mushrooms and the Vol au Vent with Mushroom Stew. Both dishes brought forth different textures of the varied types of mushrooms used — grilled eryngii mushrooms in the former and truffle mushrooms in the latter.

Craving cheese pizza? The Wolffia Pesto Garden Flatbread solves that problem. Using vegan mozzarella and a verdant pesto made from wolffia, this flatbread is crispy and full of flavour.

No brunch is complete without dessert, and so many desserts contain egg, which makes them difficult to enjoy for some. My colleague and I had the pleasure of trying the Lentil Chocolate Brownie, which, despite its slightly unorthodox ingredients, was gourmand-worthy.

The little hints of dried cranberry came as a surprise to our taste buds, and its tartness contrasted beautifully with the density of the cacao. Though made of cashew cheese, the Salted Caramel Cashew Cheesecake had a unique and memorable flavour profile.

The Masala Choice

The dish that left the deepest impression on me was the Katsu Sando — a vegan-friendly spin on the popular Japanese snack. I marvelled at how thin the slices of bread were and the kick of spices in the sandwich filling.

There were two versions of the Katsu Sando to try: one with a plant-based patty that closely mirrored the traditional cutlet of its Japanese counterpart, and one made of rolled oats, mushrooms, beans, and lentils.

To me, it showcased the very best of vegan cuisine — balancing the fine line between taking inspiration from traditionally meat-filled dishes while adding just enough creativity for the plate to stand proudly on its own.

Don’t miss out on this dish when attending the Vegan/Vegetarian Brunch!
