Come June, and everyone in Bangkok is invariably due for a wardrobe overhaul, courtesy of the wedding season. While unconventional colour palettes—think sage green, powder blue, lavender, champagne gold, and metallic pastels—reign supreme on the sartorial radar of desi shaadis, there’s much more to explore beyond minimal aesthetics and colour play for the discerning eye. If you’re anything like us, chances are you’re wondering what to wear and how to ace your look this wedding season. We asked popular names from the city’s fashion fraternity to help decode this year’s fashion memo. Take notes!
Citing versatility as the ultimate key, Tina Palsingh of Intrika shares, “Most of our clients request fusion pieces that are versatile and can be worn for numerous occasions. We create pieces that feel festive but not overdone, such as Indo-Western co-ord sets, stylish gowns, lightweight draped saris, and embroidered kaftans. Most of these outfits transition effortlessly from ceremony to celebration, keeping comfort and individuality a priority.”
With minimalism still ruling the fashion radar, Tina recommends opting for pre-drapes and fuss-free styles. “Think pre-draped saris that are easy to wear, paired with chic blouses and minimal embroidery. Silk or linen co-ord sets and draped skirts with subtle embellishments are perfect—they’re stylish for cocktails and light enough for dancing! Corset gowns, lehengas, and flowy capes also make for stunning headturners, striking a balance between delicate and daring.”
With an avalanche of trends to choose from, it’s not uncommon for wide-eyed fashion enthusiasts to feel overwhelmed. But the key, experts say, is to keep it simple. “My style is younger and more elegant, with a bit of a twist—so, I generally bring that into my work,” shares Sumedha Sehgal, who runs an eponymous design label in the city. “I take time to understand a person’s individual style, and then choose outfits they can restyle and rewear, offering them the best, most versatile option."
In terms of essentials, Sumedha encourages both men and women to invest in high-quality staples. “A black sari never goes out of fashion. It’s multi-purpose and can be styled with a variety of blouses. Similarly, a neutral lehenga and blouse can be reimagined in countless creative ways. Learn different draping styles for your dupatta, and mix and match your blouse with a sari or a sharara—it’s always a winning combo.”
