THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD (PRIME)

For the history buffs out there, this show’s for you. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Colson Whitehead, this book-to-movie adaptation is directed by Oscar-winner Barry Jenkins, making this the Moonlight (2016) director’s first-ever television series. The limited series follows Cora Randall’s (Thuso Mbedu) harrowing quest for freedom after escaping a Georgia plantation, while being chased by a slave catcher. Set in an alternate timeline where the underground railroad is a literal one, filled with engineers, tracks, and tunnels, it’s sure to be a sobering reflection piece as well as an empowering statement on one woman’s will to survive.
