The recently opened Iris & Wild Iris. Iris is a beautiful blend of dual vibes in one rooftop wine-and-dine experience. In any other context, dual personalities would be a cause for concern. However, this venue seamlessly delivers refined, relaxed dining in one space and a vibrant nighttime energy in another.
The world of Iris feels like everlasting midsummer nights, a locale where SO/ Bangkok, in its suave manner, captures the essence of the southern European Riviera on one of the capital’s most attractive rooftops.
We were also delighted to have both Khun Benjaluck, Director of Marketing Communications, and Khun Izhar, Director of Revenue and Rooms, join us for the dining experience. With all the attention to detail, they elevated the evening by weaving the hotel’s ethos of storytelling into the spaces that fulfil appetites and spark engaging conversations.
Crowd:
The environment, much like the restaurant and bar’s poetic name, is designed to host a myriad of patrons. The smart-casual and semi-formal crowd is a stylish one, as you can imagine.
Iris is about sunlit sophistication and subtle beauty, much like the flower it is named after. Its warmth and relaxing atmosphere give way for family and friends to enjoy communal sharing plates.
On the other hand, Wild Iris is where the character shifts to a more spirited vibe, as the crowd swashes curated cocktails, sways to the DJ’s tunes, and the Bangkok social nightlife vibe is turned up a notch.
Space:
The sweeping view of Lumphini Park on either floor is, for lack of a better term, absolutely gorgeous. It is the proverbial ‘cherry on top’ once you have fully embraced the venue’s design details, rooted in Riviera flair and elevated rooftop ambience.
But the keyword is versatility. The entire space, from indoor to outdoor, downstairs to upstairs, draped in its cinematic European coastal garbs, can be utilised for private parties, celebrations, and various types of gatherings that call for good food, drinks, and even better company.
But the effortless charm of southern Europe is not just found in the venue’s design elements. I had the pleasure of meeting Chef Enrico Pantorno, the Sicilian maestro behind the menu.
As per my bias to everything Italian, you can imagine how elated I was to know this was the man who would be responsible for the evening’s dining masterpiece.
We started our meal with the Burrata salad, silky and understated. The burrata paired with sun-ripened tomatoes and seasonal greens with olive oil is a clean and fresh tone to set for the rest of the meal.
A nod to Provencal home cooking, the Tomatoes farcies dodo, tomatoes filled with minced beef, rice, and herbs, delivers the warmth and nostalgia on a plate that is both hearty and quietly refined.
Keeping in line with classics was the Gambas al ajillo, sautéed shrimp with garlic and chilli, which works well as a shared plate.
The sautéed shrimp fare continued with the Linguine al gamberi, prepared with garlic, olive oil, toasted almonds, and lemon zest. Simple flavours are layered thoughtfully, resulting in an elegant dish with surprising complexity.
For a bit of indulgence, we bit into the Tartufata, combining mozzarella, truffle sauce, sautéed mushrooms, and porcini, a modern gourmet variation of pizza from Napoli.
The Iris lasagna, fresh spinach pasta, classic ragù, béchamel, mozzarella, and parmigiano, was a very close second to my favourite dish—a comforting classic that is rich without being overwhelming.
Next came the 1001 layers dessert. A combination of phyllo pastry and orange cream millefeuille with pistachio gelato and crumbles, this dessert’s light and precise presentation masks the power of the sweetness.
Slightly overpowering for me, but this is a delicate and golden piece of heaven for those of you with a sweet tooth.
However, the Irismisù, orange and espresso tiramisu, their take on the orange-cano (or orange-camo) trend, would have nearly stolen the show if it wasn’t for ‘The Masala Choice’.
It is light, airy, and the subtle bright citrus notes avoid overshadowing the true nature of a tiramisu—velvety in texture and blended perfectly with espresso and rum.
Let us not forget the wonderful bar concoctions enhancing each bite. Whether it is the London Dry Gin-based Violette in iris and Her lips or the Amara rosa, a vibrant kick of tequila blanco and mezcal—Wild Iris proves it is both style and substance.
If there was an unapologetically rich dish, the Pasta al tartufo—fresh tagliatelle, fresh cream, mixed mushrooms, truffle sauce—would be the luxurious poster child.
For one, tagliatelle is my favourite type of pasta. Second, nearly every dish bathed with truffle will tempt me to devour.
Granted, truffle is not everyone’s cup of tea, but if it is yours, you will not be disappointed.
The best version of this dish uses high-quality pasta (preferably homemade) with a truffle sauce that is not overpowering. It may not be outside the box or conceptually driven, but it perfectly strikes every single note.
