I’m partial to izakayas. They work perfectly for someone like me, who can’t decide on a singular dish and wants a little bit of everything.
But who wouldn’t want that?
What originally began as casual after-work drinking dens have evolved into dimly lit spots that inspire late-night chatter and often lead to gossamer-like nights.
Beyond the physical spaces, modern izakayas act as social melting pots where the social barriers of the city melt away over shared plates and flowing sake.
Bangkok’s home to a grand culinary landscape; a majestic, ever-evolving food scene. Despite this, the popularity of Japanese dining never seems to wane, even with new culinary trends constantly thundering on the horizon.
But if you’re looking for something a little more grounded, slightly more playful in its luxury, look no further than Fatboy Izakaya, created by Pocket Rocket, the team behind SOMSAK and Kim Jeong Grill.
Be warned… You may leave feeling like a fat boy yourself.
Space: The design philosophy at Fatboy Izakaya greets you immediately, showing that no detail is too small to go unnoticed.
The space heavily features videogame-inspired décor with collectible action figures laid thoughtfully around the venue, eliciting the ultimate wave of ’90s nostalgia.
If you take a closer look, you might notice the playful manga wallpaper wrapped around its pillars, giving the walls a graphic, textured edge.
Overhead, find quirky lighting that inspires the overall spunky personality of the space itself.
Right in the middle of the bar sits a fully equipped DJ deck, simulating a high-energy club night in a brilliant twist of izakaya comfort, where everyone gets to groove and indulge while seated.
Yet, the true rhythm kicks in when the clock strikes 9 PM, for that’s when the entire venue becomes delightfully uncensored.
The energy goes into overdrive as the team comes around to each table armed with a bottle of sake and a timer, challenging you to take a shot.
It completely breaks down the walls of the dining room, and before you know it, the room transforms into a collective celebration.
You’ll find yourself cheering for other tables across the room, as they cheer right back at you.
Crowd: Fatboy Izakaya is undeniably one of Bangkok’s hottest spots for late-night revelries over strong tipples and devilishly delicious nibbles.
Whether you are dropping by for a quick bite or spending hours poring over the menu with family and friends, Fatboy Izakaya offers an unmatched atmosphere for a throng of occasions.
Firmly settled at the table, it was time for our starters (...and a few cheeky drinks).
No izakaya experience is complete without a few libations; the Japanese would have it no other way, so we sampled a zesty glass of The Morning After (THB 340) and the umami Sumo Sour (THB 380). Kanpai!
The Truffle Wagyu Beef Gyoza (THB 280) arrived, showcasing perfectly crisped edges and a rich filling.
Next, the 3-Cheese Korokke, Grape Tsukemono (THB 180). Crunchy on the outside with an oozing, rich cheese centre, brilliantly cut by the tanginess of the pickled grapes.
Following close behind was the Kanpachi Ponzu (THB 460), featuring delicate, pristine slices of amberjack that offered a refreshing hint of the ocean, beautifully brightened by a citrusy ponzu pool.
The menu then veered into an impressive vegetable showcase, demonstrating that greens are never an afterthought here.
The Shiso Pesto Broccoli (THB 280) was charred to perfection.
It was followed by the Crispy Mushroom Curry (THB 260), a comforting bowl featuring an assortment of golden-fried mushrooms swimming in a deeply aromatic Japanese curry sauce.
A rare mushroom dish that even converted me. Checkmate.
Moving into the heavier, satisfying plates of the night, the Pork Tonkatsu (THB 650) cut an impressive figure from its very introduction.
The crispy, golden-brown pork cutlet arrived as the star of the plate, perfectly tender and satisfyingly crunchy.
The Spicy Avocado Maki (THB 420) offered a lighter, creamy vegetarian alternative, rolling smooth avocado with a fiery kick that kept the palate awake.
For the ultimate nostalgia-inducing bite, the Ramen Cacio e Pepe (THB 360) was a stroke of culinary genius.
Blending Italian sensibilities with Japanese execution, the bouncy ramen noodles were coated in a rich, peppery cheese sauce that left our table in awe.
Would it be a true meal at Fatboy Izakaya without a sweet ending?
The Coconut Blueberry Sundae (THB 320) appeared as a refreshing, tropical twist to wrap up the evening.
Even though the table was incredibly full, the sundae proved so irresistible that we couldn’t help but want to take just one more bite.
And by one bite, we definitely meant ten…
As the dishes revealed themselves, each plate more impressive than the last, there was one dish that we could not help but return to: the Fatboy Roll (THB 750).
It is a signature for a reason!
Every element works in harmony while the ingredients melt effortlessly on the tongue, offering a bite that is both familiar and configurationally elevated.
Fatboy really does it like no other.
It was almost instinctive to continue reaching for the platter until we had cleared every single piece.
