Thailand isn’t usually far behind the latest trends growing out of the Indian subcontinent or beyond. So, it's not to our surprise that the fun bunch of XOXO Society is facilitating Bangkok’s first-ever fake Indian wedding party, inspired by the numerous, vibrant, audacious, and ridiculously joyous desi weddings we’ve all been to.

The beauty of it all is that these particular doors are open to the entire South Asian diaspora, for those avid party goers and those who have never experienced a big fat desi wedding to begin with. Fortunately, Masala had the opportunity to speak with Natasha Kaur Chawla, Founder of XOXO Society, who provided a clearer picture of what all this hoopla is about.

Q

What brought about the idea of throwing ‘The Big Fat Fake Indian Wedding’ in Bangkok?

A

The idea honestly came from love, curiosity, and a little bit of obsession with fun morning parties. I’ve been seeing fake Indian weddings everywhere on TikTok and Instagram. It’s a huge Gen Z trend in Dubai, Germany, and, of course, India. So, I kept thinking, why not Bangkok?

XOXO Society usually hosts morning parties, and I really wanted to do something completely new and different for our Thai-Indian fan club. Something playful, cultural, and joyful. So yes, this will officially be Bangkok’s first-ever ‘fake Indian wedding’.

At one of our previous parties, people kept coming up to me asking for proper Punjabi bhangra songs they could dance their heels off to. Our DJ at the time was European and only had that one Punjabi MC song that everyone knows. That moment really stayed with me. I realised what Bangkok parties were missing.

This is not going to be one of those typical Bollywood nights. It’s going to be more family-friendly, all-inclusive, and welcoming. Not just for young girls and guys, but for everyone. Yes, Seema Aunty is invited, but please no rishtas. We just want to see everyone get up and dance.

For those who are secretly or not-so-secretly looking for rishtas, we do have special colour-coded wristbands that everyone is required to wear at the XOXO wedding, just for fun.

I’m honestly just a girl who loves good music, good coffee, and seeing people happy on the dance floor.

Q

At the core, why do you believe this particular partying theme or trend has been so popular? What is your perspective and experience on this?

A

I think people are craving joy without pressure. Indian weddings are full of colour, emotion, music, and connection, but they also come with expectations. This trend keeps all the fun and removes all the stress.

You do not need a reason to attend. You do not need to know the bride or groom because there isn’t one. You just show up, dress up, dance, laugh, and enjoy yourself. That freedom is what makes it so special.

Q

How do you think this event will resonate with the local crowd and Thai-Indian community?

A

I think it will resonate very naturally. Bangkok has such a beautiful mix of cultures, and the Thai-Indian community is such a big part of that. This event is about sharing culture in a way that feels easy, joyful, and real.

It’s not about doing things perfectly or traditionally. It’s about bringing people together. Whether someone grew up attending Indian weddings or has never been to one before, I want everyone to feel welcome.

Q

What would you like guests to take away from this experience?

A

I want people to leave feeling happy, included, and a little tired from dancing too much. I want them to feel like they were part of something warm and fun, something they can say was our party.

I will be one of the MCs for the event, and I’ll be wearing something special by PAVNI by Phavini Kalra (Instagram: @pavnibkk). I actually have no idea what she has planned yet, but she is such a fabulous artist, and I’m genuinely excited to find out.

We’ll also have another MC who is a well-loved TikTok creator, so the energy stays light, playful, and familiar. Throughout the afternoon, we’ll have four to five rotating DJs, each bringing a different mood, so it never feels repetitive, and everyone gets their moment on the dance floor.

We’ll have a fake baraat crew led by the incredibly talented Zumba dancer Dolly Gupta (Instagram: @dancewithdg). I actually discovered her because my aunt attends her classes, and the energy is unreal.

The event will be hosted at Aesops Restaurant & Rooftop. I chose them because Greek and Indian cultures are surprisingly similar, and honestly, the people at Aesops know way too many Thai-Indians. They are literally part of the Thai-Indian culture at this point.

One of my favourite parts of Indian weddings, apart from the dancing and the wild party people, is the henna. I don’t know what it is about it, but it always makes me so happy. So, I invited my young cousin Smiley to do henna at the event. She is genuinely the sweetest, and I already know everyone is going to love her designs.

We also have some Indian snacks from ChitChaat because I thought they were young, cool, and very us. For coffee and matcha, we wanted to support a Thai-Indian owned brand and were introduced to Skal Coffee. The owner, Kitty, is so creative and has planned special matcha menus just for the matcha girlies.

Even the smaller details came together through the people around us. We’re using Megatix for ticketing, which was co-founded by an Australian-Indian, and it felt nice to work with people who understand both cultures. It really does feel like something built together, with a lot of care.

If people leave feeling lighter than when they arrived, then I’ve done my job.

That’s really what XOXO Society is about. I try to collaborate with people from all different creative spaces so everyone feels involved. I want everyone to feel like they can call this their party.

Q

Are there more events planned in the future?

A

Yes, definitely, but very intentionally. This is just the beginning of XOXO Society. I want to keep creating experiences that feel joyful, inclusive, and human. The kind of events you look forward to, enjoy fully, and still get home early enough to get into bed, binge-watch a show, and feel excited for the next one.

When this idea started coming together, it felt very easy to reach out to Masala Magazine. I spoke with the team, and we instantly clicked. I loved the energy and aura, and it just felt right. If you’re doing something rooted in South Asian culture, creativity, and community, who better to share that story with?

This first one already means a lot to me, and I’m really grateful for the support around it. If it goes well, I’d love to keep creating more experiences like this, always with the same heart and intention.
