India was once a land of grand kingdoms, ruled by powerful royal families whose wealth and influence shaped the nation. But in 1971, the era of kings and queens officially came to an end.

The royalties in India were stripped of their royal titles and privileges because the government wanted to align the country with its identity as a democratic republic that guarantees equality to all citizens.

But even today, 50 years down the line, the tradition carries on. The palaces haven’t gone anywhere, but you can’t help wondering if they are still as wealthy as they once were, or if that richness now belongs to the past.

What Happened to Royal Wealth After 1971?

When the 26th Constitutional Amendment abolished royal privileges in 1971, it also ended the privy purses. These were basically annual allowances given to royal families. So it was a huge turning point, and it hit them hard because their guaranteed income suddenly disappeared.

Rulers were no longer recognised as “kings” and became ordinary citizens in the eyes of the law.

While they still owned vast properties like palaces and land, without a steady income, it became difficult to maintain these grand estates. This forced many royals to rethink how to sustain their wealth and lifestyle.

Yes, various royal families in India are still very rich and continue to live in luxury. But while some preserved their wealth, most of the Indian royal families saw their fortune decline over time.

Some even lost their wealth almost right away after the royal titles were abolished.

For instance, the last Nizam of Hyderabad, Osman Ali Khan’s descendants, were once among the richest in the world. They lost their state-backed income in 1947 and were left with only a small yearly allowance for a while, until even that support was eventually taken away. Over time, inheritance issues and family disagreements wore down both their money and their way of life.

There were also many small-state rajas and nawabs of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha who, despite having land and palaces, saw their wealth erode over time because they didn’t have strong business income or a way to turn those assets into something that could keep earning.

They no longer have vast fortunes and now live on modest incomes and small pensions.

So, the key difference lies in assets versus actual wealth. Though many royals own priceless palaces, jewellery, and heritage properties, it’s not always easy to convert them into cash.

While many were faced with downfalls, there are a few royal families in India today who hold significant influence and wealth, like the Mewar, Jodhpur, and Jaipur royal families. These families are in the true “mega-rich” category and live like modern-day elites.

A few top dynasties that remain wealthy today are richer now in real money terms than they were in the mid-20th century, and this is largely because they adapted early, treating their legacy like a business.

One of the most common strategies has been turning palaces into heritage hotels. Tourists from all around the world come to experience the royal lifestyle, making this a steady and reliable source of income that helps preserve both the properties and their wealth over time.

Others have turned parts of their palaces into museums. For example, the Mysore Palace is one of India’s most visited monuments, attracting 6 million visitors annually. The Wadiyar family still uses this palace to hold ceremonies and long-held traditions.

Others transitioned into business and politics, using their legacy networks to build new careers. Some royals also earn through brand collaborations, tourism ventures, and cultural events.

So, to answer whether the Indian royals are still rich, the reality is that a few royal families remain incredibly wealthy and live lavish lifestyles, while many others have had to adjust to a very different reality.

Some quickly monetised palaces and land and had strong business-minded approaches, while others faced issues like family fragmentation and legal battles.

Many didn’t develop palace hotels or land-based businesses, or continued royal-style lifestyles without growth engines like hospitality ventures or smart real estate deals, which gradually shrank their wealth to middle-class levels.
