Now serving international cuisine coupled with some of the city’s best drink deals!

By Shaan Bajaj

Living in the city has made me appreciate spending time in nature a lot more and I often find myself seeking out parks, gardens, and outdoor spaces whenever I can. So, when I heard news about the launch of The Deck, garden-style restaurant in central Sukhumvit, I was definitely looking forward to checking out all that had to offer. Beyond its promise of an enticing al fresco dining area, it is also the brainchild of the creators of venues like Hemingway’s Bangkok, Fatboy Sushi, Gulp, and tequila company, Inspirador, which means the brains behind this new business are all already well-versed when it comes to Bangkok’s dining landscape.

First impressions

Nestled on Sukhumvit Soi 20, The Deck is a spacious two-storey garden-style restaurant and bar that offers both indoor and outdoor dining spaces. Inspired by Balinese design, the space is adorned in colours and tones that take inspiration from nature with lush green plants framing the exterior seating area, ivy hanging from the second floor, and jungle-themed art covering the walls alongside funny, Instagrammable quotes. While we were touring the restaurant, Damian MacKay, Owner and General Manager also explained that the restaurant has spaces that guests can reserve for special occasions as it can seat up to 240 people. It is clear that fun and comfort are at the forefront of the design aesthetic, making the space fit for family, friends, and also pets.

Food and Drink

The kitchen is led by Head Chef Leonard Nigro who puts a focus on using fresh, quality ingredients in all of his recipes. The menu includes something for everyone, with plenty of vegetarian and vegan dishes available upon request. To begin, we sampled two small plates that are perfect for casual nibbles if you’re out in a group. The first was the Fried mac and cheese (THB 200), golden brown triangles of rich, cheesy goodness that are paired with a chipotle aioli that really elevates the dish. So moreish, I guarantee you will not stop at just one. The second was the Buffalo cauliflower (THB 190). Soft on the inside and crisp on the outside, when paired with the blue cheese dressing it really packed a punch.

After appetisers, we sampled the Charred gem Caesar salad (THB 350), which was a unique take on the classic Caesar because as soon as you lift your fork, a hint of smokiness floods the senses. The salad is filled with chunks of bacon, juicy chopped tomatoes, and croutons, making it hearty and delicious. For a vegan option, we sampled the Kale salad (THB 360), a refreshing mix of kale, apples, and a toasted almond dressing.

We then moved onto mains. If you’re a fan of spicy food, I recommend ordering the Chili crab spaghetti (450 THB). The dish is abundant with Thai chillies and fresh herbs making it deliciously fragrant, while the XO sauce offers a lot of umami flavours. We then sampled their Smoked eggplant katsu (THB 380). The dish comprised of tender eggplant with a flaky outer layer that sits on a bed of spicy chipotle crema, garnished with feta, dill, and marinated cucumbers.

To conclude the meal, the restaurant has plenty of desserts on offer including the tempting Oreo cheesecake (THB 199), refreshing Passionfruit panna cotta (THB 199)and the Freshly baked skillet brownie (THB 199) for those who like their sweet treats on the indulgent side. To pair with the meal, The Deck offers a long list of non-alcoholic and alcoholic refreshments encompassing beer, spirits, wine, and signature cocktails. Moreover, their happy hour begins at noon and ends at 7pm, making it an ideal all-day hangout spot.

Masala Recommends

My favourite dish was the Baked camembert (THB 580) because the combination of fresh bread, melted cheese, and lemon jam was truly divine. The strong citrus flavour from the jam does well to cut through the richness of the cheese resulting in a really balanced and delicious dish.
