According to Ayurveda, the human body is composed of three primary energies, known as doshas. The doshas include Vata (space and air)Pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (earth and water). Your main dosha type was already set when you were in your mother's womb, and these are called prakriti. Your doshas shape your body, mind and personality for life. Knowing your dosha type helps you understand how your body functions, what food is best for you, and how to stay balanced in life.

Here's a deeper look into each type of Dosha

Vata Dosha Type

What Vata feels like

If Vata is your predominant dosha, then you can most likely resonate with these traits. You always feel cold, your hands are sometimes like ice, and you always prefer the AC to be off. You find it challenging to gain weight no matter how much you eat. Furthermore, your energy comes in bursts where you may be full of life in one moment and completely drained the next.

You think fast, and your mind is always jumping from one thing to another. Your body and mind are light, quick and always moving. You're creative, adaptable, always curious and full of ideas.

What throws Vata off balance

Since Vatas are made of air and space, too much of the same energy throws you off balance. When life becomes unpredictable, Vata's mind starts to feel scattered and anxious, and the body feels restless. Multitasking, jumping from one thing to another, or trying to do too many things at once can make your mind race and leave you feeling ungrounded.

Also, things like irregular routines, skipping meals, cold temperatures or cold drinks, constant change, travelling frequently, and too much screen time can all aggravate Vata, leaving you with that airy, unsteady feeling. Even overstimulation like noise or busy spaces can drain your energy, making it harder for you to focus and stay calm.

What balances Vata energy

To stay balanced, focus on slowing down and warming up. Moist, oily, heavy and warm diets will bring you back to balance. Opt for dishes like rice, sweet potatoes, daal, cooked grains or food made with healthy oils or ghee and drink warm herbal teas. Vata's should avoid food like iced drinks, raw salads, crackers and popcorn as it could cause more bloating, gas and constipation.

Vatas should also avoid heavy cardio and overexertion as it can drain energy. Instead, go for gentle movements like yoga and slow walks. Stick to regular sleep and meal times as this helps the mind and body feel steady.

A video by the Sattvic Movement YouTube channel reveals that Vata types can benefit from the 5 S’s to build strength, clarity, and calm energy. These include: Self-massage, strength training, sunbathing, single-tasking and soothing touch. Adding these to your daily life can help balance the airy, changeable nature of Vata and bring you back to centre.

Pitta Dosha Type

What Pitta feels like

If Pitta is your predominant dosha, then this likely sounds like you. Unlike Vata, your body is naturally warm, and you might be the one who always wants the AC on. You feel warm most of the time, but you sweat easily. You love cold weather, chilled drinks, and fresh air. You have a strong appetite, a sharp mind and a clear sense of direction.

You're the go-getter, pushing your limits in every area of your life, whether it's work, workouts or learning. You love ticking off that checklist, setting goals and solving problems. You are the achiever, bringing heat, passion and intensity in everything you do.

What throws Pitta off balance

But that fire can turn into a burnout if you're not balanced. Stress, even the self-imposed stress, pressure, and overworking, can overheat your system both physically and mentally. When you're upset or feeling off, you can be easily irritated, frustrated and impatient, over-criticising of others and even yourself. For Pitta, too much spice and fried food can cause acne breakouts, heartburn, headaches, inflammation and even intense mood swings. So without cooling habits, that intensity can start to feel overwhelming.

What balances Pitta's energy

To stay balanced, your focus should be on cooling down, softening and letting go of control. Choose food and drinks that can cool down your body, like coconut water, cucumber, melons, mint, chilled herbal teas and leafy greens. These help reduce internal heat and calm inflammation. Avoid spicy and oily foods and don't skip meals, as your body runs best on regular fuel.

Not everything has to be perfect, so step back and take breaks. Exercise should challenge you, but in a calming way. Nature walks, swimming and gentle stretches relax the nervous system and lower internal heat. Remember, rest is just as valuable as important goals.

Spend time in cool environments with fresh air, shade, or even cold weather as this can help you feel more at ease.

Kapha Dosha Type

What Kapha feels like

You don't get too hot or too cold. Your body handles temperature well. However, you probably have slow digestion. You might feel full even after a small meal. You may also notice that you gain weight easily, even if you don’t eat much. If this sounds like you, then Kapha is your predominant dosha.

You are steady and calm in nature, like a soft river moving slowly through life. You can be slow to start things, but you always finish what you start once you are focused. You feel safe and grounded, and people feel calm in your presence. You may have a solid build, smooth skin, and gentle eyes. You enjoy comfort, routine, and taking your time with things.

What throws Kapha off balance

Kapha is naturally heavy, cool, and slow, so anything that adds more of those qualities can cause problems. Sleeping too much, eating heavy or oily foods, and not moving enough can make you feel slow, stuck, or unmotivated.

Cold, dull and damp weather can also add to the heaviness. When you are off balance, you might feel tired all the time, gain weight easily, feel emotionally low and even depressed. You can also hold onto things for too long, like old habits, sadness and relationships. These weights you down and keep you off balance.

What balances Kapha's energy

What balance Kaphas is doing is activities to keep you active, like walking, dancing and cardio. Even skipping rope can get things moving. Eating light, warm and spicy foods can give you energy and strengthen your digestion. Avoid taking naps during the day and wake up early as this can keep your mind fresh.

Trying new things and breaking routines can help Kapha feel more alive and motivated. Basically, anything that brings lightness, warmth, and stimulation will balance Kapha’s calm but heavy nature.

Mixed Dosha Types

After taking the quiz, you may find that you’re a mix of two doshas. For example, Vata-Pitta, Pitta-Kapha, or Vata-Kapha, which means you carry qualities from both. Mixed doshas are actually the most common type in Ayurveda. You might feel cold like Vata but have strong focus like Pitta, or be calm like Kapha but also fiery like Pitta. Your body, mood, and digestion can shift depending on the season, food, or stress.

To stay balanced, you need to watch which dosha is more active at the moment. For example, in summer, Pitta might rise, while in winter Vata may take over. Your diet and lifestyle should help calm whichever dosha is too strong. When balanced, mixed types enjoy the best of both worlds which are energy, strength, focus, and stability. Ayurveda encourages a balanced lifestyle rather than extremes. Here's why perfectionism in health can backfire.
