There is a special kind of magic to stepping inside a library: the sweet scent of old books, the hush of whispers, and the soft turn of pages. One such beloved spot for Bangkokians is the Neilson Hays Library in Surawong. Founded in 1869 by expatriate women longing for a literary home, it later found permanence thanks to Jennie Neilson Hays, a Danish-born missionary and pivotal figure in its history. Today, alongside the charm of its historic shelves, visitors can now enjoy a brew from F.I.X., a newly opened café within the library. Known for its creamy Flat white cold brew and rich Pure black cold brew, as well as teas and brunch plates, it is the perfect weekend stop for coffee, culture, and a touch of nostalgia.

The crew behind Bā hào is back, and this time, they are serving up serious soul food at XIN XE GOI, just a short stroll away from the Hua Lamphong railway station. Borrowing its name from the alley’s old nickname, which was once packed with Chinese medicine shops, this new gem offers dishes designed to comfort and revive in their own way. Highlights include the Iced cold-skinned Thai tomatoes with plum granita, a bright, refreshing plate that pays tribute to the beloved Thai Sida tomato we often find used in som tum. With a menu rooted in bold flavours and a laid-back atmosphere, XIN XE GOI is poised to become a go-to spot for those looking to explore Bangkok’s dynamic Sino-Thai culinary scene.
