The Quad serves out an impressive ensemble of flavours

The Squad at the Quad

Mahmood Hossain

Bangkokians are spoiled with choices in the world of culinary arts. From dependable roadside food carts to Michelin-starred indulgence, the seamless transition of a bustling soi’s aromas and flavours to a fine dining palette in sophisticated surroundings is immaculate beyond measure. We are truly blessed. We don’t ask why, we simply embrace it. The Quad Sukhumvit Eatery on the revamped ground floor ofThe Landmark Bangkok is the perfect example of this experience. Whether you’re a guest in the hotel or a famished visitor strolling off the street, you’ll be transported to a trendy and comfortable dining atmosphere with options that will be challenging to turn down.

THE AMBIANCE

The Quad is presented as a dynamic dining hall, featuring four diverse eateries and a bar that can be thoroughly enjoyed by family, friends, and colleagues. It’s a blend of urban street culture and artisanal cuisines right next to one another. First, there is The Greenhouse – a restaurant that provides a taste of both Chinese flavours brought to you by Chef Mak Kin Fai from Hong Kong and the fifinest Thai dishes from Chef Air. Its interior is spacious, elegant, and inviting, complemented by polished wooden beams, glass panels, modern lighting, and dark shades of green throughout.

Next, we have Pastaio – a page out of Nonna’s kitchen, offering some of the best and fresh Italian fare. Whether it’s the al dente pasta or the crunch of oven-fresh pizza, it aims to deliver a variety of authentic Italian staples and more, alongside aesthetics modelled after a neighbourhood pizzeria. Its next-door neighbour is Cupping Coffee & Baker, a delightful café with quality roasted coffees, such as the Biscoff latte (THB 150) Hot matcha latte (THB 120), and the ever-so-tempting Shokupan French toast (THB 150). Across the way is Meathead, which is a Western dining experience that ups the burger game, accompanied by sandwiches, sides, and Bourbon milkshakes that get tastier with each bite and sip. On the topic of sipping, and last but not least, the Cucu Bar & Terrace is where mixologists concoct strong High Balls, craft cocktails, draft beer, and wine, just enough to get the edge off.

THE CULINARY SELECTION

My colleague and I were slightly overwhelmed at first, not sure where to begin, so we figured the best approach was to go clockwise, starting with Pastaio. The first bite, which might have stolen the show, was of the Crudo e burrata (THB 250), where 18-month aged ham, burrata cheese, rocket salad, and tomato sauce combine to provide a burst of flavours that strike an elegant balance between freshness and indulgence. The next dish, with a fiery passion, was thePolpette all’arrabbiata (THB 290), a combination of grounded beef and pork meatballs, spicy tomato sauce, parmesan cheese, and focaccia bread that awakens the palate with its savoury, smoky, and slightly tangy warmth. From one tender and juicy dish to another, we dove into the Radiatori khao soi nuea yang (THB 280). This was a unique blend of wagyu beef, red curry paste, coconut milk, and a brilliant mix of fragrant spices.

The obsession with meat continued onto Meathead’s namesake burger, the Meathead (THB 280). The beef patty was cooked to perfection, brilliantly topped with American cheese and Meathead sauce. However, the Goongzilla (THB 280) may have overshadowed the former, a lively mix of a prawn patty, American cheese, Japanese mayo, Nam Jim Talay sauce, and Asian slaw. Slightly balancing the pallet (and I use that phrase loosely) was the Wagyu striploin salad (THB 380) – a bowl of Mesclun salad, shallots, sundried tomatoes, crumbled nachos, beef jus, and red wine vinegar dressing.

Fortunately, on this day, we brought our appetite, ready for the next culinary onslaught. Adding to our epic meal were dishes from The Greenhouse, such as The Landmark congee (THB 500) – congee with abalone, scallop, prawn, special meatballs, and pork offal;See krong moo cluke foon (THB 350) – grilled pork with toasted rice powder; and the Egg noodle with special wontons topped with bbq pork (THB 260; THB 95 extra for BBQ pork). But of these delicious items, the simplest combination of meats won the award of our favourite of this round of the Masala choice.

THE MASALA CHOICE

The plate of Crispy pork, bbq pork, and roasted duck (each sold separately) from The Greenhouse, is as simple as a meat dish can get. No frills, no fuss, just three types of meat fried, grilled, and roasted to perfection. This can be the ideal after-hours bite, especially when you have the CuCu Bar & Terrace sitting pretty on the opposite side of The Quad, serving up both staples and unique cocktails to take the edge off.CuCu highball (THB 390) – Hendrick’s gin with tonic; Don’t speak (THB 290) – vodka, dry vermouth, passionfruit liqueur, fresh lemon juice, honey syrup; and Love at first sight (THB 290) – bourbon, lemon juice, syrup, Maraschino liqueur, topped with sparkling wine, are only a couple of select choices delivering an overly satisfified dining experience.
