Bar.Yard Hosts Kurumba Kitchen Pop-Up Bringing Sri Lankan Flavours from Sydney to Bangkok

Masala Editorial

This March, Bar.Yard at Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok invites diners to experience the vibrant flavours of Sri Lanka with a special Kurumba Kitchen Pop-Up, taking place Friday 27 – Sunday 29 March 2026 on the rooftop venue’s 40th floor.

Bringing the energy of Sydney’s acclaimed dining scene to Bangkok, the pop-up features Kurumba Restaurant & Bar, a Sri Lankan restaurant and wine bar from Surry Hills, Sydney, celebrated for its bold flavours and modern interpretation of traditional Sri Lankan street-food cuisine.

Founded by the De Hoedt family, Kurumba blends the aromatic heritage of Sri Lankan cooking with contemporary culinary techniques and premium local produce. Since opening, the restaurant has quickly gained recognition as one of Sydney’s most exciting new dining destinations, earning praise from critics and appearing in several “best new restaurant” roundups.

A Celebration of Sri Lankan Flavour

Leading the kitchen is Executive Chef Augustus “Augi” De Hoedt, whose career spans more than 35 years across Sri Lanka, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Drawing inspiration from generational family recipes and the vibrant street-food culture of Sri Lanka, Chef Augi’s cooking combines bold spices, layered aromas and contemporary technique.

For the Bar.Yard pop-up, guests can explore a curated selection of Kurumba’s signature dishes that highlight the depth and diversity of Sri Lankan cuisine. The menu begins with flavour-packed starters such as Smoked Brisket Pan Roll with pineapple ketchup, Seeni Sambol Puff with caramelised onion and curry leaf cured egg yolk and Hot Butter Soft Shell Crab with calamansi jam and fermented chilli sauce.

Seafood lovers can look forward to Hokkaido Scallop with coconut XO and kaffir lime, while the main courses showcase dishes including Short Rib Curry with fermented chilli, Negambo Prawn Curry with finger lime, and the indulgent Lobster Kottu with chopped roti and roasted lobster head curry.

Vegetarian options such as Cashew Curry, Roasted Pumpkin Curry, and Eggplant Moju reflect the versatility and rich spice traditions of Sri Lankan cooking.

To end on a sweet note, guests can enjoy traditional desserts including Wattalappam, a baked jaggery custard with roasted cashew and spiced vanilla ice cream, or the signature “Kurumba” dessert, featuring coconut financier, toasted coconut mousse and coconut-almond praline.
