A guide to Bangkok’s newest rooftop bars

by Ashima

Bask in the Bangkok ‘winter’ at one of these brand-new spots.

COOLING TOWER
A cooling tower forms when air meets water and hot transforms into cold. Inspired by this concept, The Cooling Tower (pictured above), located on the 34th floor of the Carlton Hotel Bangkok Sukhumvit, invokes a breezy and relaxed atmosphere. The bar boasts an expansive terrace fitted with chic and comfortable sofas, marble-topped tables and marble accents lining the walls. Its open-air style allows for picturesque views of Bangkok at twilight. When you visit, we recommend sampling some of their creative tapas dishes or if you’re looking to really indulge, the menu offers mains from both land and sea. Best of all, don’t miss out on their wide-range of local and imported beers, wines, and spirits, as well as bespoke cocktails curated to reflect the spirit of the bar. One example, the Golden hour (THB 350) is a must-try signature cocktail that’ll rejuvenate you with its notes of lime and oranges, and date syrup infused into Ketal One Vodka. THE CASSETTE SKY BAR
The Cassette Sky Bar, launched in October, sits on the 29th floor of SO/Bangkok in Sathorn. Quite literally a pink gem floating in the sky, the stylish bar takes a page from its original brand The Cassette Music Bar at Ekkamai, embodying the 90s with its striking pink cassette logo and accents of fuchsia and powder pink in all the décor. The ceiling is lined with impressive low-hanging clouds bathed in a soft pink glow to create an almost-heavenly space. Mirroring the clouds, the bar offers sweeping views of Bangkok’s skyline through large floor-to-ceiling windows. To complete the vibrant atmosphere, live renditions of 80s and 90s classics will take you on a dreamy trip down memory lane. As impressive as their interiors, the bar boasts a unique selection of libations and delicious global cuisine. If you’re planning a visit, make sure to sample their signature cocktail The cassette cloudy pink (THB 890), which pairs perfectly with their recommended main, Angel hair pasta with chilli, garlic, and bacon (THB 260). PARADISE LOST
Recalling Miami in the 1960s, Paradise Lost is a neo-tropical rooftop bar that first opened its doors in August. Located on the 25th floor of the unique Siam@ Siam Design Hotel, the open-air bar is awash in shades of pastel pink and yellow, tables accented with plants, and an elegant black and white tiled bar displaying an extensive collection of booze. We can promise there will never be a dull moment at Paradise Lost, from its 360 degree views of Bangkok to the flashing neon signs and impressive line-up of local DJs. In a bid to raise awareness about sustainability, the bar serves cocktails crafted using locally sourced ingredients. One signature drink not to be missed is the Can’t burn concrete (THB 400), which draws inspiration from Bangkok’s towering concrete jungle. The unique libation is a mélange of tangy mango with hints of chrysanthemum honey and Dewar’s Scotch whisky. Pair your poison with one of their well-thought out bar bites that include fresh seafood, and cheese and charcuterie boards. Facebook: @paradiselostofficial

BAR.YARD
Established in August, Bar.Yard, located on the 40th floor of Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok, offers a fun, sophisticated twist on a Tiki bar. Touted as an ‘urban backyard’, expect a day-to-night party with sweeping panoramic views. The modern space is dotted with verdure, décor that’s perfect for Instagram shots, and vibrant furnishings that will transport you to a dreamy island oasis. The ambience is elevated courtesy of different resident and guests DJs, who play various genres of music ranging from tropical house to chart hits. Bar.Yard’s kitchen team is led by Executive Chef Lamberto Valdez Lara who has crafted a menu centred on a fusion approach to the traditional barbecue. Options range from sharing platters like From-the-sea grilled ocean platter (THB 1,190) that champions Thailand’s fresh seafood, to vegetarian options such as the refreshing Watermelon and cucumber salad (THB 190) to beat the Bangkok heat. Just as vibrant, the extensive beverage menu features tantalising Tiki-inspired cocktails encompassing the Junglebird (THB 330), a potent concoction made from rum, Campari, pineapple and lime juice. LENNON’S
Immerse yourself in nostalgia at one of Bangkok’s newest speakeasies, Lennon’s, on the 30th floor of the luxurious Rosewood Bangkok Hotel. A truly unique concept, as you enter the bar you are greeted with over 6,000 vinyl records that invoke the spirit of an old-school recording studio. Once you turn the corner, you’re welcomed into an art-deco inspired speakeasy, replete with antique leather sofas and vintage-inspired light fixtures. It doesn’t end there, as a sleek spiral staircase leads up to a bespoke cigar lounge that completes the retro Hollywood vibe. As you soak in Bangkok’s famous urban landscape below, you can wind down to soothing jazz and blues from the 60s, played by talented vinyl-spinning DJs. Delve deeper into your nostalgia with one of their signature cocktails named after several classic throwback tunes, like the citrusy Staying alive (THB 430) inspired by the Bee Gees, the spiced Tabla solo in Jhatpal (THB 430), a salute to the revered Indian virtuoso Ravi Shankar, and the sparkling gin-based Woman (THB 430) that pays tribute to John Lennon.
