These couples may be twinning, but who’s winning?
By Aiden Jewelle Gonzales
When love isn’t blind, it’s apparently seeing double. Matching with your beau, intentionally or inadvertently, might be cute, but you also run the risk of your better half being your better-looking half, and celebrities are no exception. We’ve turned our discerning eye on these pairing pairs to answer the age-old question: who wore it better?
Print or Misprint?
Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh are not only #couplegoals but also #doublegoals – their matching outfits have been making fashionistas’ hearts go pitter-patter for years. However, you’re really only in sync when you end up twinning across time and space – as seen recently when Deepika wore a dazzling Dior gown during Paris Fashion Week 2019, characterised by a lively print and autumn colours. Discerning eyes noticed that Ranveer, during his promotional tour for Kill Dil (2013), wore the outfit’s mirror image – that is, a funhouse mirror as though it has a similar mien, the wolf print suit by Sanchita Ajjampur somehow clashed with itself and was more overload than à la mode.
If there’s one place you can wear a work of (dubious) art, it’s the Met Gala – which Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner took to heart with their matching geometrics during the 2019 event. Sophie’s beaded jumpsuit, glittering makeup and silver-sprayed hair may have turned deco into “decked out” but Joe’s tight turtleneck emphasised all the wrong features and was definitely a Vincent Van No. Sure, art is subjective…that is, subject to ridicule, especially when you’re wearing what looks like a modern rendition of the Crayola masterpiece I scribbled on our apartment’s walls when I was three.
Oops, I Denimed Again
Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s short-lived romance at least has one enduring legacy: their ill-advised fling with denim and bling during the 28th American Music Awards has become one of the most talked-about looks of all time, with other celeb-couple copycats donning the denim together. However, while Britney’s bustier-cut dress and chunky diamond accessories might be very “I’m not a girl, not yet a woman (with taste)” we have to give it to Justin Timberlake for really committing to the jean cowboy look, replete with jacket, denim shirt, and even denim cowboy hat. He may not be bringing “SexyBack” but at least this look will never be “Dead and Gone” from people’s minds.
Going for Gold
They’re young, they’re fit, and their romance still hasn’t lost its shine – literally, as seen by the matching gleam on their grins and outfits during Manish Malhotra‘s birthday party last year. Disha Patani and Tiger Shroff twinned in black and gold, but although they may be his namesake animal’s colours, Tiger looked anything but fierce. With the unfortunate sheen of a Ferrero Rocher wrapping, the jacket made him look more “pimp” than “primped” and the plunging neckline that matched Disha’s didn’t help. Disha’s maxi skirt, on the other hand, had enough of a burnished sheen to add the right touch of glam to an otherwise casual look.
