On the anniversary of the one-year launch of “stories” on Instagram, the mobile application has revealed the top geo-tagged destinations across the world.
The feature is similar to Snapchat and allows Instagram users to post photos or videos to their profiles that will disappear after 24 hours. Over the past year the app has rolled out additional elements to the stories feature, such as allowing people to geo-tag and to include filters and stickers on their stories.
The top geo-tagged place might surprise some travelers, as it wasn’t Paris, New York City, London or any other top tourist destination. The top tagged city in the world was Jakarta, Indonesia, Instagram told Travel + Leisure.
This Indonesian city is known for its bustling traffic, abundance of high-rises buildings, and shopping malls. While not as picturesque as some of Indonesia’s more popular tourist islands, Jakarta attracts visitors with its mix of cultures and fast-paced cosmopolitan lifestyle.
São Paulo, Brazil came in second, with New York City landing the third-ranking spot. London and Madrid rounded out the top five.
