For Unity, Harmony, Strength and Friendship
More than 1,500 people from Indian communities living in Thailand participated in the Indian-Thai Sports Day, held at Chulalongkorn University Sports Center Stadium on January 29. The athletic meet, sponsored by the Indian Association of Thailand, brought together sports enthusiasts from age six to over 14 years old. They competed in track and field events, such as football, basketball, running, shot put and the long jump. This year, senior men competed in a tug-of-war, short-distance running and the long jump. All those competing were awarded T-shirts and winners took home medals for first-, second- and third-place finishes. Trophies were awarded to overall winning teams.
The Indian-Thai Sports Day maintains a goal of using these athletic events to promote physical fitness, sportsmanship and teamwork. The athletic competition helps bring together the men, women and children from various Indian-Thai communities and the Indian residents of Thailand, regardless of gender, religion or politics, in a casual setting and healthy environment. This is all done in the spirit of the Indian Association of Thailand’s motto – Unity, Harmony, Strength and Friendship.
The success of this highly-anticipated day wouldn’t have been possible without the tireless efforts and continuous support of the Indian Association of Thailand. For next year’s event, the organisers are looking forward to including participants from other regions in Thailand, such as Chiang Mai, Phuket and Pattaya, to join in on the competitive fun.
