It is best to let the experts diagnose your problem and receive the timely treatment that will help you recover faster, cheaper with long-term benefits.Prominent Indian businessman, Avnish Chawla, gives an account of the chain of events that transpired during a recent holiday to Hua Hin.Avnish ChawlaPatient
I was at the beach in Hua Hin with my friends and I was experiencing intense pain in my abdomen. During the time, I was feeling very uncomfortable and I could not eat anything. So I went to a hospital nearby and a doctor told me that it could be an ulcer, but they would have to investigate further and blood tests were required. Afterwards, the doctor said it might be a problem with my heart. But if I went to the hospital in Hua Hin and there was something seriously wrong, I would have to stay there. So I came back to Bangkok and went straight to Dr. Davin Narula at Sukumvit Hospital. I had a blood test and an EKG. When Dr. Davin saw my blood sugar and blood pressure tests results, he said my pressure and sugar levels were very high. He then sent me to Dr. Nivit Kalra, a cardiologist, who told me that I actually had a minor heart attack and that I was fortunate to survive. In Hua Hin I didn’t realise I was having heart problems even though I was feeling uncomfortable. Dr. Nivit said there was a blockage, and I would need to have a stent put in. After the procedure and within a month, I lost 15 kilograms.
“This is a problem we face quite often in our current day of practice, where Avnish thought he was experiencing gastric pain, rather than a heart-related problem. Luckily, he met Dr. Davin on time, as Dr. Davin sent Avnish right away to the ICU and a blood test was done to confirm there was a heart attack. Once the results came back, we immediately started the procedure of coronary angiogram. Avnish had two different lesions in his arteries. So first, we stabilised one artery and then we rescheduled the second. During the first procedure, we went through the right coronary artery and found the lesion at 85 percent. So we dilated and then stented. Another lesion was in the left coronary artery, which was corrected later. The take-away message is — when you experience any symptoms that makes you feel pain or makes you highly uncomfortable, you should see a physician immediately. Sometimes, severe diseases can come with milder symptoms so it’s best not to overlook anything. Then again, we should not delay anything that needs to be treated immediately as it is usually easier, cheaper, and takes a shorter time to fix during the earlier stages. I always tell my patients to hit early and fast as it becomes easier to manage in the long term.
Avnish improved dramatically after the procedures. Over the long term, we were able to reduce his medication. However, after going through a treatment like Avnish did, some lifestyle modifications are needed, and we try to make sure that you don’t have to come back to us anymore after making those changes. But, remember, when you begin suffering intense pain or discomfort, don’t delay. Please come in for a checkup.”
