“Alleged affair,” “reportedly dating” and the classic “just friends” are only a few phrases that we hear when sparks fly between actors in the industry. The love affairs between B-town celebs are nothing less than a filmy spectacle, and therefore, will never fail to entertain the gossip hounds. Featuring a lot of infidelity, heartbreak and drama, Masala unravels six of the most astonishing dating scandals that we have seen over the years.

1. Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha’s off-screen Silsila

The most talked about love affair to date involves Bollywood icons Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha. Sparks flew on the set of Do Anjaane (1976), even though Amitabh was a married man. While the Bachchans maintained a stony silence on all allegations, Rekha confessed her love for Big B in an interview with Filmfare magazine in 1984 saying, “Why should the public know of my love for him or his love for me? I love him. He loves me — that’s it. I don’t care what anybody thinks.” The actress also started wearing sindoor (vermillion) long before she tied the knot with her now late husband Mukesh Aggarwal, so it is speculated that she wears it to signify her devotion to Big B. If you wish to know more, watch Silsila (1981) as it supposedly portrays what happened between Amitabh, Jaya and Rekha. Plus, the director of the film, Yash Chopra himself, confirmed their relationship!

2. The Kapoor Lovebirds

Do you remember a time when you were away for work and didn’t have the opportunity to meet new people, so you just ended up dating your distant cousin? Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor Ahuja sure do! The duo have known each other since they were kids and worked together as assistant directors in Black (2005) before making their debut in Saawariya (2007). It is well-known that their onscreen chemistry was a result of their off-screen romance. However, the relationship didn’t end well as Sonam teamed up with Ranbir’s ex Deepika Padukone to gleefully trash him in Koffee with Karan Season 3 for not staying faithful to his partners. She said “Ranbir is a great friend. But I don’t know if he’s a great boyfriend.” But all’s well that ends well, now that Sonam is happily married to businessman Anand Ahuja and Ranbir has moved on with actress Alia Bhatt. Moral of the story: Don’t cheat and definitely don’t date your relatives!

3. Twinkle’s Aitraaz: Priyanka Chopra and Akshay Kumar’s Fling

Although she is now happily engaged to American singer and songwriter Nick Jonas, Priyanka Chopra in the past has had multiple controversial linkups with married actors in Bollywood, and one of those include khiladiyon ka khiladi Akshay Kumar. Having released several hits together, the two actually grew close when shooting for Andaaz (2003), and started making headlines for their way too genuine chemistry during their filming of Aitraaz (2004). As a result, Twinkle Khanna ran out of patience and demanded her husband stop working with Priyanka. The married couple apparently had an ugly spat at a restaurant in Goa, which was witnessed by many, and Akshay hasn’t worked with PeeCee since.

4. Arjun Kapoor’s Half Girlfriend: Malaika Arora

When Malaika Arora and Arbaaz Khan split after 18 years of marriage in 2016, it was said that Malaika’s budding relationship with Arjun Kapoor was one of the main reasons for their separation. The Khan family was unhappy with the developments in Malaika and Arjun’s relationship, and the actor had been warned by Boney Kapoor to avoid getting on Salman Khan’s bad side. But it seems Arjun is quite whipped for his Munni, because although the pair has yet to publically acknowledge their relationship, choosing to hide behind the “just friends” label, he is often seen leaving Malaika’s house at night.

5. Ajay Devgn’s Simran: Kangana or Kajol?

You can practically hear the heartbreak of all the fans that rooted for Kajol and Ajay Devgn’s relationship, but extramarital affairs at this point are unfortunately a norm. Ajay and Kangana Ranaut got involved in a no strings attached relationship when they were shooting for Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai (2010). According to media reports, it was a casual romance where neither of them expected anything from the other, and so Ajay insisted his directors cast Kangana in movies with him. All was well until she couldn’t play by the rules and went ahead to develop feelings, and Ajay, who had no intentions of leaving his wife, ultimately put an end to their fling. In a controversial interview with Stardust magazine, Kangana went on record to admit that getting involved with a married man was a mistake. One would expect that to be common sense, but guess not! And it seems like she still hasn’t learned her lesson, as her alleged affair with Hrithik Roshan soon followed.

6. The Dancing Jodi: Sridevi and Mithun Chakraborty

Beloved Bollywood icons Mithun Chakraborty and Sridevi reportedly fell in love while shooting for Jaag Utha Insan (1984). Although Mithun was married, the pair secretly tied the knot and joined Dharmendra-Hema Malini and Raj Babbar-Smita Patil as the first couples to break the trend of loyal filmy families with the start of second marriages. It gets even more unsettling when you find out that she had to prove her love for Mithun by tying rakhi on Boney Kapoor. However, when she realised that Mithun had no intentions of leaving his first wife for his second, she decided to move on with her rakhi brother.
